Science jobs from UCL Institute of Ophthalmology: job description
Applications are invited for a distinguished 3-year Fight for Sight PhD studentship commencing in October 2009. The studentship covers a tax-free stipend (£17,500 rising by £500 each year) in addition to covering tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.
This project aims to understand the mechanism of ocular development using animal models. In particular, the process of cornea formation from the stem cells/progenitor cells will be a major focus of study. This includes in vivo functional analysis, molecular analysis, imaging of development, and evolution. We are looking for very motivated candidates with excellent scientific potential.
The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology carries out research in well-equipped laboratories adjacent to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust. The Institute achieved the highest ratings in the last four RAE assessments. Research within the Institute is wide-ranging covering from basic sciences to clinically-related translational study. This is an ideal environment for research training.
The PhD student will benefit from state-of-art facilities within the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences. The successful candidate will gain experience in developmental biology, molecular biology, evolution, and stem cell biology. This project will benefit a student who wishes to establish a career in Biomedical Science.
Applicants should hold (or expect to obtain) a minimum upper-second degree or equivalent in an associated subject such as developmental biology, biological sciences, or genetics. Previous laboratory-based research experience is desirable.
Formal applications should be submitted in the form of a CV and covering letter outlining motivation, interest, and suitability for this project to Prof. Shin-ichi Ohnuma at s.ohnuma@ucl.ac.uk and Dr. Yoshiyuki Yamamoto at yoshiyuki.yamamoto@ucl.ac.uk. Contact details for three references should also be provided.
Applications deadline is on 8th March 2009
