Universal Home scholarship winner

Wageningen University and Research Centre

Job description
You will carry out an NWO-funded research project on conditionality of plant-animal interactions, a collaboration of two WU groups with RUG, NIOO and the University of Arizona. You will study how interactions between Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) at the Veluwe, the Netherlands, are affected by food abundance and the presence of a third species, Wild boar (Sus scrofa). The central hypothesis is that food competition changes the hoarding behaviour of the mice in favour of oak dispersal and recruitment. Read the rest of this entry »

Scholarship Information

Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN)Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry of Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN)

We are looking for a phd student for the topic:
“Computer modeling of biological nanostructures”.

The research will be performed in Krakow Poland (36 months) and in Stockholm (12 months).

Info on the project: www.mpd.agh.edu.pl

Understanding mechanisms of metalloenzymes at the atomic scale is a prerequisite for rational design of bio- or biomimetic catalysts. The goal of this project is to contribute to that understanding by applying theoretical methods to reliable models of selected metalloenzymes. With the use of various theoretical methods, including molecular dynamics, QM/MM methods and pure quantum chemical modeling, a coherent description of enzymatic processes will be sought. Awards and Scholarships—Scholarship Information

University Ca’ Foscari of Venice

PhD student position (scholarship) in human and ecological risk assessment of nanomaterials, supported by the FP7 funded ENPRA (Risk Assessment of Engineered NanoParticles) project and the ECSIN (European Centre for Sustainable Impact of Nanotechnology).

The main aim of the PhD project is to improve our understanding of complex engineered nanoparticles exposure situations and toxicological effects to human health as well as the environment, and to develop and apply adequate methodologies for a sound risk assessment. The emphasis is to further develop non-conventional ways of addressing potential risks (e.g., weight of evidence approaches, expert elicitation, multi criteria decision analysis, etc.), taking into account the deep uncertainties that currently pervade every step of the risk assessment procedure.
A panel of engineered nanoparticles (metal, metal oxide and carbon-based nanoparticles) will be selected as case-studies. Read the rest of this entry »

PhD student for a project on allergen biosensors

Radboud University Nijmegen Faculty of Science

Job description
Food allergies are an increasing problem in our society. There is therefore a clear demand for efficient tests that allow people to detect whether or not their food contains ingredients to which they are allergic. This PhD project aims to develop a highly sensitive biosensor for peanut allergies. For this purpose proteins which bind to the allergens that need to be detected will be immobilized on a sensitive membrane. Read the rest of this entry »

PhD student for a project on artificial organelles

Radboud University Nijmegen Faculty of Science

Job description
As a PhD student you will perform your research activities embedded in the bio-organic chemistry group. The goal of this PhD project is to develop polymersome-based biocatalytic nanoreactors which can be applied inside a living cell, in order to construct truly artificial organelles. Polymersomes are polymeric vesicles which are composed of block copolymer amphiphiles. These capsules can be used for the compartmentalization and encapsulation of enzymes, resulting in a protective environment for these biocatalysts. Read the rest of this entry »
