4 year PhD studentship in Immunolgy : Babraham, Cambridge, CB22 3AT

Science jobs from Babraham Institute: job description

A 4 year BBSRC CASE studentship is available to investigate the role of PI3K in T helper cell differentiation and cytokine secretion. To be eligible, you need to be a UK resident or EU national and to meet the criteria for dmission to the University of Cambridge Graduate School which include obtaining a first or upper second class BSc degree or equivalent. The ideal candidate will have a degree in biological sciences including a significant immunology component.

The student will also spend a proportion of the time at GSK in Stevenage. In addition, GSK will pay £3000 in addition to the standard BBSRC annual stipend. EU residents may need to apply for additional funding (see http://www.babraham.ac.uk/graduate/funding.htm for details).

Informal inquiries can be addressed to Dr Klaus Okkenhaug (klaus.okkenhaug@bbsrc.ac.uk).

Project description:

Regulation of T helper cell differentiation, cytokine expression and secretion by PI3K

CD4 helper T cells that have never been exposed to cognate antigens are referred to as naïve or virgin T cells. Naïve T cells require costimulation for their activation and can within hours produce the cytokine interleukin 2. Subsequently, and depending on cytokines present during the initial stimulation, naïve T cells differentiate to adopt effector phenotypes which are classified as distinct Th or regulatory T cell lineages based on the combination of transcription factors they express and the types of cytokines they can secrete. Initially, a simple model prevailed where T cells either differentiated to IFN-γ secreting Th1 cells or IL-4 secreting Th2 cells.

PI3Ks are intracellular lipid kinases that generate second messenger signalling molecules which control growth, proliferation, differentiation and migration. We have shown that p110δ(D910A) mice, in which the p110δ PI3K catalytic subunit has been inactivated by point mutation, are resistant to differentiate and produce less effector cytokines such as IL-4 or IFN-γ (Okkenhaug et al 2006; Patton et al 2007).

While the Th1/Th2 dichotomy model has been extremely useful in identifying the principles, signalling pathways, transcription factors and epigenetic changes that control T cell differentiation, the model has been wholly inadequate in explaining the complexity of immune responses to pathogens or how autoimmune diseases develop. We now know that naïve T cells can adopt at least 5 different well-defined lineages (Th1, Th2, Th17, Tfh and Treg) and more are likely to be discovered. The student will elucidate precise roles played by p110δ in regulating Th cell differentiation and cytokine expression, both by extending our previous observations and by investigating the effect of PI3K inhibition on the development of new Th subsets.

These studies should provide novel insights into how a conserved signalling pathway can be exploited by T cells to fine-tune immune responses against diverse pathogenic micro-organisms.

Science jobs from University of East Anglia, School of Environmental Sciences: job description

This fully funded studentship is available to start in October 2009, under the supervision of Dr Roland Von Glasow in the internationally renowned School of Environmental Sciences, UEA Norwich (RAE 5 ∗∗).

UK/EU APPLICANTS ONLY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING (this is because of the eligibility rules of the funding body)

FUNDING IS AVAILABLE FOR UK/EU STUDENTS. FUNDING FOR THIS PROJECT WILL COVER TUITION FEES AND STIPEND FOR UK STUDENTS, EU STUDENTS.WILL NORMALLY BE ELIGIBLE FOR TUITION FEES ONLY. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS FUNDING; THEY ARE STILL WELCOME TO APPLY FOR THIS PROJECT BUT WOULD HAVE TO FIND ALTERNATIVE FUNDING.

The chemical composition of the polar boundary layer is intricately linked with the cryosphere (snow/ice). The snowpack is a major source of trace gases that increase concentrations of the OH radical in the boundary layer. Processes linked to new sea ice formation drive emissions of halogens, especially bromine and iodine. All these emissions enhance the oxidising capacity (the fundamental reactivity) of the polar boundary layer. Given existing and predicted changes in the extent of the cryosphere, we need to explain current trace gas processes in order to predict their future role. BAS’s Atmospheric Chemistry group is at the forefront of such research, and two highly successful year-round field campaigns have yielded a rare archive of measurements of boundary layer chemical composition. During this PhD project, the student will conduct a thorough analysis of the BAS datasets, and then use UEA’s existing numerical models to test our understanding of processes. Specifically, they will use an established 1-dimensional multiphase model of the boundary layer that was recently modified for polar applications and will include a newly developed snow photochemistry module. Data interpretation will be further assisted with back trajectories from the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) to assess the role of different source regions (open ocean, sea ice or snowpack) on air mass composition. Insights from the field measurements and the fit to model results will give confidence that processes are correctly understood. This assurance will allow an attempt to scale up the very detailed results from the 1-D model to the whole of Antarctica. The student will be based at the British Antarctic Survey in Cambridge but will spend time at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. At both institutes, the student will work as a member of highly experienced atmospheric chemistry research groups. The student will receive training in atmospheric chemistry (with a strong focus on the polar troposphere) as well as in numerical modelling. This NERC PhD studentship is linked with the BAS core science programme Chemistry and Past Climate. Fieldwork is not currently planned during the studentship. The ideal student will have an excellent degree in a subject where Chemistry and/or Atmospheric Science comprised the major part. They will also have very good mathematical ability and a strong interest in Earth System processes.

Vacancy for a PhD student

The research group of Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology (IMDO) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is a dynamic and international research team where the majority of research projects aim to study the biodiversity of traditional fermented food products to identify and fully characterize interesting isolates of lactic acid bacteria and acetic acid bacteria. These isolates are further investigated towards their potential as innovative, functional starter cultures to be used in industrial food fermentations to improve texture, shelf-life and aroma of the fermented foods. Also, IMDO is involved in health-related research projects on pro- and prebiotics as functional foods.

To accomplish its mission, IMDO can rely on a state-of-the- art research infrastructure comprising computer-controlled fermentors, molecular microbiology equipment and an extensive analysis platform for metabolomics, as well as on an in-house developed functional gene microarray.

To strengthen its team, IMDO wants to hire a PhD student that will be involved in research on genomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics of lactic acid bacteria and acetic acid bacteria. The successful candidate should have a Master degree in Bio-engineering Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Biology. Knowledge of bioinformatics software tools for sequence analysis and Perl scripting skills are a plus, as is hands-on experience with Linux and MySQL (or a related RDBMS). Further, the candidate should be a team-player and should have excellent communication skills.
