Scholarships Engineering Postdoctoral/Research Associate

PhD student (OIO)/Postdoc

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL)

We have obtained a large number of MMTV induced mammary tumors from the Balb/c mouse strain, a p53 conditional knockout strain and ErbB2 transgenic strains. The mammary tumors are being screened for MMTV insertion sites and the putative oncogenes that are activated have already been identified while other may be identified in future experiments. An important aspect of the project is to confirm the transforming capacity of the candidate oncogenes and investigate how these genes collaborate in vivo using genetically modified mice. Next, the regulatory pathways these oncogenes are acting in, will be studied using biochemical and cell biological techniques. A recent publication from this work: Theodorou et al., MMTV insertional mutagenesis identifies genes, gene families and pathways involved in mammary cancer. Nat Genet. 2007;39:759-769. The Postdoc should have a strong background in molecular biology and some training in cell biology. Health Services Graduate Degree (PhD, MPH, MS, MHA)

Ph.D. researcher for the department of Public Health.

University Medical Center Rotterdam (Erasmus MC)

The department of Public Health is involved in a large number of projects investigating the effectiveness of interventions to prevent cancer or death from cancer. Our department has a high reputation in this field, both among national (Ministry of Health, RIVM) and international policy makers (US National Cancer Institute, European Commission).

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are an important health problem and a major cause of death in the Netherlands and most western countries. Fortunately, several strategies are available to prevent CVD, such as primary and secondary prevention (screening). We are investigating the possibilities of organized screening for CVD to gain understanding of the development of these diseases and how this development is affected by screening. The research into screening is done with the aid of simulation models. This research project is part of a project on integrated prevention in which not only CVD are studied, but also some cancer types, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer and lung cancer. In this project you will conduct research independently as part of a research group of other epidemiologists, mathematicians, modelers, economists, and medical doctors. You will also work closely with our national and international partners.
Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a MSc. degree in Epidemiology, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Medicine, Biostatistics or a related field.
Conditions of employment

The Ph.D. candidate will be appointed for four years. The initial gross monthly salary will be 2.046,- increasing to 2.622,- in the fourth year for a full-time position (36 hours per week).
