Scholarship Grants in History and Civilization at European University Institute

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence offers one of the world’s largest and most distinguished graduate and postgraduate programmes in the social sciences.

Its Departments of Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences, with their researchers, fellows, faculty and visitors, constitute an international research environment with a community of scholars drawn from over fifty countries in Europe and beyond.

The Department of History and Civilization (HEC) offers a structured four-year doctoral programme. In the first year doctoral researchers study historiographical and methodological issues and the in-depth exploration of selected central themes of European history.

In the second, third and fourth years, researchers pursue their individual research, and are invited to present the results of their work in seminars and workshops. Professors direct more specialized research seminars, tailored to the needs of researchers.

The Department provides training in research skills, IC&T and multimedia skills and encourages researchers and fellows to make use of the Language Centre.

Funding is provided for doctoral researchers to go on a mission twice a year to work in archives and libraries. Researchers may also receive financial support to present their work-in-progress at international conferences.

PhD and Postdoc Positions Scholarship in Solar Radiation and Energy, 2010

Overview

An excellent PhD opportunity is available for a joint project with the Weather and Energy Research Unit at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University in the area of Solar Radiation and Energy.

The appointed PhD student will develop a solar radiation and energy forecasting system aimed at improving the way in which solar energy produced by a selection of energy devices is integrated into the electricity grid. Such a system may eventually be implemented operationally by bodies such as the Australian Energy Market Operator and/or solar power farms operators.

This work will involve analysing solar radiation output from Numerical Weather Prediction models by comparing it with historical observations in order to improve our understanding of the physical processes relevant to solar radiation. The forecasting system will then capitalize on this detailed analysis. Other areas of weather and climate science will benefit from this solar radiation analysis.

Key Capabilities

- An understanding of meteorology, especially of solar radiation processes, and effects of clouds and aerosols.
- Familiarity with at least one software language for data analysis (possibly R)
High level interpersonal skills suited to effective interaction with other members of the research team and industry contacts.
- Demonstrated high level of communication skills.
- Active support of the CSIRO code of conduct and HSE requirements.

Key Result Areas/Duties

- Analyse solar radiation data from observations (in situ and satellite) and model output for Australia with a possible extension to a wider region using a standard software program (e.g. R, IDL, Matlab).
- Investigate and improve our knowledge of solar radiation forecasts provided by Numerical Weather Prediction models.
- Investigate and improve our knowledge of the interaction between solar radiation and solar energy production for a selection of energy devices.
- Develop a solar energy forecasting system using a combination of Numerical Weather Prediction model output and historical data for a selection of energy devices.
Write and submit research papers, and a Ph.D. thesis

Applications

Scholarship applications close 30th November 2010, but the search may remain open until the position is filled. The selected PhD student will be awarded a research support budget of up to AUD 24,000 per annum.

Scholarship Info Doctoral position ‘Agricultural function of grassland biodiversity in productive farming systems

Grasslands in Central Europe strongly contribute to the biodiversity in rural landscapes. Intensive agriculture has a detrimental effect on biodiversity. However, recent research has shown that diversity also has the potential to support grassland production systems by stabilizing or even increasing yields. So far, these findings have hardly been applied or verified in current productive farming systems. In a multidisciplinary approach, agronomic, economic, philosophical and social dimensions of ecological results will be discussed (for details www.biodiversitaet-gesellschaft.uni-goettingen.de).

Scholarships Engineering Postdoctoral/Research Associate

PhD student (OIO)/Postdoc

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL)

We have obtained a large number of MMTV induced mammary tumors from the Balb/c mouse strain, a p53 conditional knockout strain and ErbB2 transgenic strains. The mammary tumors are being screened for MMTV insertion sites and the putative oncogenes that are activated have already been identified while other may be identified in future experiments. An important aspect of the project is to confirm the transforming capacity of the candidate oncogenes and investigate how these genes collaborate in vivo using genetically modified mice. Next, the regulatory pathways these oncogenes are acting in, will be studied using biochemical and cell biological techniques. A recent publication from this work: Theodorou et al., MMTV insertional mutagenesis identifies genes, gene families and pathways involved in mammary cancer. Nat Genet. 2007;39:759-769. The Postdoc should have a strong background in molecular biology and some training in cell biology. The PhD student and Postdoc should have an interest in research focused on both fundamental and clinically relevant aspects of tumorigenesis.
