The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences is an internationally renowned centre for research and teaching within the applied health sciences. This reputation was further enhanced during 2009 with the launch of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), a partnership between the University of Manchester and six NHS Trusts aiming to advance scientific discovery and its translation into patient benefit.
Research opportunities span both the biomedical (genetics, tissue engineering, pharmaceutics) and health (psychology, epidemiology, primary care) sciences with extensive training in multidisciplinary areas. Our PhD training also incorporates transferable skills in aspects such as public engagement, scientific writing and career management to provide an unrivalled depth of support.
The Faculty is currently offering a number of fully-funded 4-year PhD studentships to UK/EU nationals seeking PhD places commencing October 2011. Funding will provide full support for tuition fees, all associated project costs and an annual tax-free stipend at Research Council rates (2010 rate was £13, 590). A generous allowance towards the costs of attending external seminars and conferences will also be provided. Some of our projects provide opportunities for external training placements within industry or partnering institutes.
Projects are available within six priority themes:
Basic bioscience underpinning health
Biotechnology and biopharmaceutical development
Environmental and social influences affecting health
Mental health and wellbeing
Populations and public health
Regenerative medicine – application and advancement
Applications are welcomed up to and including 10 January 2011. A full summary of available projects and further details on the Faculty can be found here:
