Master Scholarships in International in University College

All students accepted have the possibility of receiving partial and in most cases full scholarships to attend our program (including accommodation, monthly living stipend, travel expenses and more).

Eligibility

• Candidates from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on law, economics, finance (business or accounting,) political science, anthropology, and sociology.
• Candidates must be at the Masters level, meaning graduation from their undergraduate program by July 2011 (does not apply to exchange students).
• Additionally a high level of English language ability (IELTS 6.5 or 7) is required. While students are not required to submit an IELTS or TOEFL score (though highly encouraged) with their application, we do expect in this case that the candidate provide some other equivalent method of reviewing language level (e.g. an academic paper written in English).

To give you some background on the college and our program:

The IUC was established in 2006 for the interdisciplinary and comparative study of law, economics and finance, in response to the clear lack of a transnational set of normative principles capable of controlling economic processes. The program specifically looks to engage students and young scholars from all over the world with special emphasis on the periphery, or 'global south', with leading figures in economics, law and the humanities.

The IUC offers a 1 year LLM program in Comparative Law, Economics and Finance as well as a 2 year MSc. A number of renown intellectuals and scholars from around the world serve on the faculty and advisory board, including: Guido Calabresi (former Dean of the Yale School of Law), David Gerber (Chicago Kent School of Law), Josef Halevi (University of Sydney), Duncan Kennedy (Harvard Law School), Ugo Mattei (University of Torino & University of California, Hastings), Stefano Rodotà (coauthor of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights), Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate), Gunther Teubner (Frankfurt School), Jan Toporowski (SOAS, University of London), Gustavo Zagrebelsky (Emeritus President of the Italian Constitutional Court).

The IUC students are from more than 40 different countries, spanning four continents, representative of a diverse range of disciplines and cultural backgrounds, with a focus on offering opportunities to students coming from social, economic, and/or political challenges, particularly students from former colonized territories (e.g., the global south) and other newer peripheries

International Excellence Undergraduate Scholarships

Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq, who died in 1920, bequested to the University of Canterbury an endowment for scholarships in classical literature in memory of his father, the Reverend Charles Alabaster.
Two scholarships are offered annually to matriculated and undergraduate students of the University of Canterbury or, under special conditions, a scholarship may be offered to a graduate.

Eligibility
Two scholarships, tenable for one year, shall be offered for competition every year to students in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses.
Candidates for the scholarships will be required to sit a written examination and submit an essay.
Candidates may offer either Latin or Greek or both; but a general knowledge of both Greek and Roman history and literature will be required.

The Maria Pia Gratton International Award 2011

The Maria Pia Gratton International Award at the University of Illinois was established by the family and friends of Maria Pia Gratton. Pia passed away on October 31, 1995, at the age of 47. When she came to the United States, Pia had two small children, a degree in math, and little grasp of the English language. Pia enrolled in classes to learn English and computer programming, and with determination she made a home for her family, developed close friendships and began a career in her new country. Those who knew Pia knew her to be a beautiful woman, a caring mother, a loving wife, a dependable co-worker, a true friend, a conscientious student, a patient teacher, and a daring traveler. This award continues Pia’s memory with a living tribute to her life.

Who is eligible to apply for the Gratton Award?

This award is intended to enable a female graduate student from outside the United States to have an academic and cultural experience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Preference will be given to a student who has had a limited opportunity to travel outside of her home country.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply:

Applicants must either be: a) currently enrolled as graduate students at UIUC with at least one academic year (i.e., two semesters) of graduate school remaining after the conclusion of the academic year in which the student is applying for the Gratton Award; OR b) if not currently enrolled as graduate students at UIUC, applicants must be applying as graduate students at UIUC for the academic year immediately following the year in which the student is applying for the Gratton Award (Note: Applicants who have not yet been admitted to UIUC must follow regular academic admission procedures. What does the Gratton Award include?

The Gratton Award provides a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend totaling $10,000 for the academic year.

When is the deadline to apply for the Gratton Award?

The deadline to apply for an award for Academic Year 2011-2012 is April 4, 2011. All applications will be reviewed after the deadline. Decisions will be announced and applicants will be notified via email as soon as possible after the deadline.

What criteria are considered by the selections committee in evaluating Gratton Award applications?

The selections committee will take into account the degree to which applicants share Pia’s philosophy of life and desire to improve their multicultural experiences and education. Pia believed that living among various people, studying various cultures, and learning various customs taught her to appreciate and respect the people of this world. What does the application consist of?

The application consists of three questionnaires and one electronic material submission. The first questionnaire asks for basic information about the applicant, the second questionnaire asks the applicant to respond to an essay prompt, and the third questionnaire asks the applicant to provide detailed financial information about funding sources. The electronic material submission outlines the conditions of applying for the award and requires an electronic signature. Scholarship applicants must complete and submit all of the questionnaires as well as the electronic signature form in the application. Your application will be complete once you see check marks in each of the questionnaire and material boxes. Incomplete applications may not be reviewed.

PhD student position in Historical Geology and Palaentology at the Department of Earth Sciences

Origins of Proterozoic-Cambrian photosynthetic microbiota

Starting date: Open from the closing date for applications.

Unicellular, organic-walled photosynthetic microbiota (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) diversified at an increasing rate through the Proterozoic and in the Cambrian explosion. Their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly understood because their morphology is not always sufficient to infer their systematic position. Studies of phenotypical features, combined with cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers may help to unravel their biological affinities. More precise placement within a geologic time frame will allow the cause-effect relationships between evolving photosynthesing (primary producers) and forthcoming heterotrophic biota (consumers) versus global environmental change to be better understood.

The PhD student will collaborate with researchers at Uppsala and in foreign universities working with the palaeobiology, systematics, ultrastructure and biogeochemistry of cell wall, and the evolution of organic-walled microbiota. The aim of the project is to elucidate the biological affiliations and relationships to extant microbiota of selected microfossils (acritarchs), with emphasis on their life cycle, reproduction and environmental adaptations. The study will be based on analyses of phenotypical features and the cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers by new microscopic, spectroscopic and tomographic techniques. This interdisciplinary approach between Palaeobiology, Earth Sciences and Astrobiology encourages a strongly motivated candidate to develop collaboration with scientists from different disciplines and across the fields of studies.


The applicant should have a university degree with a background in micropalaeontology, palynology, biology and/or geology, and a keen interest in palaeobiology, evolution and biogeochemistry. Applicants with skills in microscopy, laboratory techniques and image analyses are especially welcomed. The abilities to work in a team, to share experiences and knowledge, and be open to the application of new methods of research are essential. Because of a strong international character of the research, applicant is expected to have a good knowledge (spoken and written) of the English language. Acquisition of a (basic) knowledge of Swedish is strongly recommended to facilitate departmental communication and activity, but this is not a requirement for recruitment.

The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research and study. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative duties can be part of the position up to 20% of a fulltime work.

The Ph.D. position is for four years where financing for the first year will be a postgraduate study grant (Utbildningsbidrag) and during the following three years as an employee of the university as a Ph.D student.

The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of the graduate studies. The Uppsala University is strongly committed to the equal opportunity policy and women are especially invited to apply.

Postgraduate Scholarship 11 FEM Fellowships starting on Spring

Research and Innovation Centre welcomes applications for 3-years research fellowships to support brilliant and highly motivated students to get the PhD title in the fields covered by the Centre.

We welcome applications from students of all countries. The official language of the programme is English. Applications can be sent from 13 September 2010.

General information

Eleven (11) scholarships are available for PhD research in the fields covered by the strategic research areas of our Centre: Environment and Natural Resources Area , Food Quality and Nutrition Area, Genomics and Crop Biology Area. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their curriculum and of the letters of reference. Letters sent by the applicants will not be considered (see below the form for the reference letter).

The grant is for three years and the expected start is February 2011 (Spring 2011 at the latest). The gross salary is 20.000 Euros per year. Students will also benefit of funding for travelling to our projects’ partner institutions as the projects include a minimum period of 6-months-stay at the institution co-responsible for the single PhD project.

There is a general empowerment of the student choice when applying to our PhD research projects. Candidates can postulate for one to three specific projects (see list).

Selected candidates are awarded a 3-years fellowship. The scholarship can be additionally extended for up to 1 year, pending the approval of the FEM PhD Fellowships Committee.

Please note that the CRI issues a specific certificate of attendance, but candidates are asked to register at the doctoral school of the University partner of the project or of another University, in order to get the conferral of the PhD degree. The selected candidate has 1 year time from the start of the contract to register at the University doctoral school. If the candidate fails to register within the first year, the scholarship will be interrupted.

Candidates should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in fields relevant to the research projects (earth or life sciences disciplines, included environmental engineering, e.g. biology, chemistry, ecology, mathematics, environmental science…).

Scholarships By Grade Level

When most people think of college scholarships, they think of awards given to college freshmen based on applications submitted during their senior years of high school. While many scholarships do fit this description, this is by no means the case for all awards. In fact, there is free money awarded to students at every grade level.

A few scholarships will have open eligibility, allowing anyone who meets basic requirements to apply, whether they are high school (or even middle school) students, college students, or graduate or professional students. Many such awards may be sweepstakes contests, or awards based on specific activities, such as community service. Others may divide awards by grade level or age group and give out multiple scholarship prizes. These allow for a broad appeal but still ensure that students with more educational experience and therefore stronger academic skills don’t have an unfair advantage when it comes to winning scholarships.
Many providers limit scholarships by grade level

More commonly, though, scholarships are targeted to specific age groups or grade levels. These might range in specificity from a scholarship for high school juniors born in a particular calendar year to a scholarship for anyone who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or professional program. While scholarship competitions that limit eligibility to students in a particular grade in high school or year in college are fairly common, more general eligibility categories are probably what you’re likely to see the most.

By limiting their eligibility requirements to one group of students, scholarship providers are ensuring that students who take the time to enter their contest are competing with students of similar levels of educational attainment. This can help ensure a high quality pool of applicants, and also assist scholarship providers in judging the submitted applications more fairly. For example, mistakes that are common and easily forgiven in an essay by a high school junior are not so common or easily forgiven in an essay by a doctoral student.
Scholarships for High School Students

Scholarships for high school students are probably the most common category of scholarships by grade level. High school students are planning on starting college for the first time and likely don’t have other sources of funding lined up. Scholarships for high school students, therefore, are creating an investment in a student right at the beginning of his or her academic career and are providing funding that is likely desperately sought.
Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

Not everyone has four years of funding locked in when they arrive on campus the first day, and many students may find themselves continuing their scholarship search throughout all four years of college. Unexpected expenses arise, grades fluctuate, and plans change as students spend time in school, so a student who may not have been a prime candidate for a scholarship as a high school student may become one as a college sophomore or junior. Many scholarship providers recognize these changes and have created scholarships for undergraduate students who are successfully continuing their studies beyond the first year of college.
Scholarships for Graduate Students

While less common than the other varieties, scholarships for graduate students are available. Graduate students typically rely heavily on fellowships or assistantships, but these aren’t available to everyone and don’t always cover a graduate student’s living expenses. Therefore, a number of scholarship providers are willing to help graduate students finish the last leg of their educational journeys by providing a bit of extra funding.

Forest Home's Scholarship Guidelines

Sitting in the boys’ living room with their mother and hearing about the scholarships and honors Austin and Tyler Burdick will be taking with them to the University of Virginia in the fall, a less intrepid reporter might wonder just where these Flint Hill kids went to high school.

The answer to such a dumb question, of course, would be: right here.

“This room probably more than others,” says Tyler, who, though identical to his 18-year-old brother, is wearing a slightly different jersey bearing the insignia of the University — where both boys also have earned scholarships to play polo. “But really the whole house has been our classroom — and the whole farm.”

Yes, intrepid one, the Burdicks were in fact home-schooled since the beginning of their school days by parents Todd and Jane Burdick on the Crest Hill Road farm where the family raises sheep and horses, and where Todd Burdick bases his equine veterinary practice.

Theirs is a success story — between them, the two won nearly a dozen scholarships — not always told by those who choose the harder road that homeschooling presents.

“I’m sure there were certain aspects of things we may have missed [not attending a school],” Tyler says, smiling as he politely answers another intrepid question. “But I feel I’ve learned a lot more here than I could have otherwise.”

Austin puts his finger on it. “We were able to accomplish much more here because we had the freedom to study what we wanted — and that does take discipline.”

The Burdicks graduate summa cum laude this month from a novel Catholic-Igniatian-Classical/Great Books program administered by Kolbe Academy in Napa, Calif. — but carried out by their parents, with help from local artists and additional coursework at Lord Fairfax Community College’s Middletown campus.

Virginia was the boys’ first choice, but they were also accepted at Cornell and Texas A&M. Austin will probably major in chemistry, Tyler in biology, but they both have interests in a business curriculum. Both are minoring in art.
Among other awards, the two each won $1,000 National Society of High School Scholars National Scholar Awards, selected from among 12,000 applicants for excellence in academics, leadership and community service. Claes Nobel, senior member of the family that established the Nobel prizes and founder of. the Scholar Awards, said: “I am deeply honored to recognize Austin and Tyler as two of our most outstanding students.”

Tyler’s awards include a $1,000 Most Valuable Student contest award from the Virginia Elks Association; a $1,000 Mary NcNeil Willis Scholarship from the Culpeper Regional Hospital Auxiliary; $2,000 as a national regional finalist in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the College Board.

Austin garnered a $1,000 Best Buy @15 Scholarship for academic achievement and community service; a Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District scholarship; a Windmore Foundation for the Arts $1,000 Dorothy Skelton Art Scholarship to continue his education in the visual arts; a $1,000 Lee-Jackson Scholarship from the Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation for his essay, “Reverence and Resolve: The Forces Guiding Thomas Jackson,” and the Jeff MacNelly Art Award commemorating the former Rappahannock resident and three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist, from the Headwaters Foundation.

Ask the boys if they’d consider pursuing the same path in the future for their own kids, and Tyler says, intrepidly:
“Our parents have been super-supportive of us, but it’s been a huge commitment for them. I’m . . . not sure I could do what they’ve done.”

Jane Burdick says the boys’ dad directed the boys’ schooling through seventh-grade, while she worked full time at Fauquier Hospital; after that, she took over.

“We are so grateful to these organizations for the opportunities they’re giving the boys to fund their education,” she says. “And for families that may be contemplating homeschooling, especially high school homeschooling, this shows that — it can be done! Your kids can be selected to attend their school of choice, they can qualify for scholarships — athletic as well as academic. You can do it!”

General Information

The Office of Admissions along with the Office of Financial Aid administer the majority of Scholarships at the University of New Mexico. Scholarships are traditionally known as merit based, and a competitive process usually accompanies the activities surrounding selection and monitoring of the various programs. Major responsibilities and duties within the scholarship structure deal with the formation of student programs and the administration of these programs.

Specifically, there are four major scholarship functions for which these offices are responsible:

* Institutional Scholarships include, but are not limited to: the Regents', National, Presidential, UNM Scholars, Omega, PACE and Transfer Scholarships. These programs are funded by several sources, including outside private donations;

* State Funded Scholarships include, but are not limited to: NM Legislative Lottery Scholarship, Amigo and NM Scholars. These programs are funded by the state of New Mexico;

* Departmental Scholarships are selected at the department levels, but the actual student awarding and administration is handled within this office;

* Private and Outside Scholarships include hundreds of programs which flow through our process. These programs are also selected by outside mechanisms, but are ultimately included in our scholarship process.

Overall, these offices oversee the administration of over 50 million dollars in scholarships awarded each year at the University of New Mexico.

Funding - Though German Universities charge a very minimal tuition fee, students are still advised to plan their budget considering other general living expenses, boarding and lodging, insurance, books etc. A scholarship or grant may be the answer for those who dont have the necessary financial resources.
