HITACHI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
This program is offered to the university staffs who wish to study at Japanese graduate schools for Master’s or Doctoral Course in the area of science and technology and intend to contribute to their university for promotion of higher education after completion of study in Japan. Under this program, we have invited 158 university staffs since 1985.

HITACHI RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
This program intends to encourage the university staffs having keen interest in conducting post-doctoral research in the area of science and technology to enhance their professional backgrounds and promote academic collaboration through building mutual human network with Japanese universities and/or institutions. We have invited 128 university staffs since 1986.

KOMAI FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
This program started in 1989 under the auspices of late Mr. K. Komai, the first Chairman of the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation, to encourage interactions between Southeast Asian countries and Japan. The program, therefore, intends to encourage the university staffs having keen interest in conducting study and research to enhance their academic and professional backgrounds in the area of social and cultural science related to Japan. We have invited 40 university staffs to date.

Scholarship Program for Postgraduate Study in Japan

The Hitachi Scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for Southeast Asian universities to send faculty members, who wish to continue teaching and research at their universities after graduation, to Japan as part of their human development programs. Recipients of this award are invited to attend Japanese public and private graduate schools that have close relationships with Southeast Asian universities. The Scholarship provides financial support and personal assistance and consultation.

Eligibility for the program is limited to faculty members up to the age of 30 for masters degree candidates or 35 for Ph. D. degree candidates in the fields of scince and technology and each applicant must be recommended by a senior staff at their home university as a potential candidate for international reasearch collaboration after graduation. Each grantee receives full financial support to study Japanese for six months after arrival. The Foundation funds tour programs every year to visit various location in the fields of industry, science technology, research, culture, history, society and nature so that the grantees’ experience and understanding during their stay in Japan will not be limited to one campus.

• Environmental friendly (green) shipping (11-05ITN)

Existing propulsion machinery must be optimized and new novel systems must be developed to meet future requirements. The main objective of this research is to adapt advanced energy and environmental technology from other fields, to be applied onboard maritime installations.

• Ship behavior under real operational loads and conditions (11-08ITN)

Ship behavior under normal conditions, are well studied. However, the interaction between vessel and external factors such as sub-sea equipment under demanding operations requires new research approach. The main objective of this research is to develop knowledge and methods to analyze ship behavior including external loads and conditions.

• Remote control and monitoring of maritime operations (11-07ITN)
The cost and availability of cheap and advanced instrumentation, microprocessors and data transfer solutions has opened for new possibilities for remote monitoring and control of systems in operation. The main objective of this research is to develop knowledge and methods to design effective remote operated condition monitoring systems including intelligent analysis for effective evaluation, and how to apply this technology to make extended laboratory facilities.

• Complex marine operations management (11-06ITN)

Ships and machines for demanding marine operations are getting more and more complex. Integrated control systems and interacting crews challenges safety. Planning and executing high risk operations challenge a safe and effective management. The objective of this research is to develop knowledge and methods for effective and safe management of complex high risk operations off-shore.
All these research fields are linked together in the overall research programs at AAUC, and will be part of a research team. The research may be both theoretical and experimental, and in close cooperation with local industry partners, NTNU/MARINTEK in Trondheim, and relevant international universities/research centers. The common goal for the vacant positions is to build up research activity over a period of 5 years. The PhD candidates will be part of the Research Centre for Marine Operations in Virtual Environment (MOVE) at AAUC.

The multi-partner initial training network SADCO aims at: Training young researchers and future scientific leaders in the field of control theory with emphasis on two major themes sensitivity of optimal strategies to changes in the optimal control problem specification, and deterministic controller design; Advancing the theory and developing new numerical methods; Conveying fundamental scientific contributions within European industrial sectors.

In order to reach these objectives, SADCO establishes a collaborative research and training network of 11 full partners from both the academic and industrial sectors, and gathers participants with expertises in complementary disciplines in mathematics and engineering. The network also offers a complete range of theoretical, practical and complementary training as well as scientific workshops. SADCO will work together with the young researchers to develop and implement effective training plans tailored to each individual requirements. Multi-disciplinary training based on the integrated scientific programme, secondments, regular meetings, active networking, will ensure the success of this projects.

The development of new ‘clean’ technologies in power, transportation and other domains is a major opportunity for EU industries. The research programme will help place EU universities in the forefront of Optimal Control, a field of mathematics that supports these technologies.

The training programme, based on institutions covering the principal areas of the field, will provide a new generation of young mathematicians with broad skills in Optimal Control, which are not readily acquired at one institution alone. They will be equipped to take forward research in Optimal Control at universities, or to work in related, emerging technological areas, of vital importance to society.

Political analysts for Al Jazeera have suggested the 'Dawn of a new Arab century'. Hilary Clinton has claimed that America is losing the information war to stations such as Al Jazeera and RT (6/3/11).The resilience and determination of Egyptians and other Arab nations to assert a peaceful claim to power and demand democracy challenged the Western notion of the 'arab exception' to the desire for democracy and thus more broadly the dominant Orientalist stereotype of the East as irrational, unchanging, emotional and autocratic.

Through a critical discourse analysis approach, this PhD thesis will explore contemporary shifts in representations of the Arab world from the war on terror to the current Arab 'revolutions' to consider the ways in which an Orientalist/ 'exception' discourse is redrawn, challenged or asserted in western and/or Arab media in 2011. Will changing political realities and the methods of political action through which Arab people attempt to assert agency (Spivak 1988) impact on the Orientalist / exception discourse Should we revisit this agenda to consider the impact of an increasingly globalised consumer market on representation of the Arab world? (Ritzer 2007)

The thesis will examine both visual and linguistic discourses. Applicants should have, or expect to receive a qualification equivalent to a high class UK honours degree.

Santos Scholarships for MSc in Energy and Resource

The UCL 9University College London) School of Energy and Resources, Australia currently has up to five full-time Santos Scholarships to award to the most outstanding students to study full-time on the MSc in Energy and Resources: Policy and Practice.

The scholarship programme is open to all students (both Australian and international) who have been issued with and accepted an offer of admission (conditional or unconditional) to study full-time on the MSc in Energy and Resources: Policy and Practice programme at UCL School of Energy and Resources, Australia.

The application for the Scholarship must include an essay critically analysing the statement: "The concept of 'peak oil' is fundamentally flawed".

The essay should be no more than 1000 words (including footnotes, but excluding references) and will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin ®

Applicants who are shortlisted for Santos Scholarships on the basis of their academic qualifications and potential will be ranked according to the quality and originality of their assignment. Their financial circumstances will not be taken into account.

Applicants who have been successful in securing a scholarship will be informed in the first week of July for commencement on 25 July 2011.

The scholarship will be awarded by the UCL Council on the recommendation of a selection panel made up of UCL academics. If there are not sufficient suitable applications, scholarships may not be awarded and may be re-allocated and awarded in the following year.

The value of each scholarship is the total tuition fees for the two years of the programme, paid directly to UCL School of Energy and Resources, Australia. In addition, those studying on a student visa may be awarded a stipend for living expenses of up to AU$25,000 payable in each year of the programme. The scholarship is tenable for two years, subject to continued satisfactory academic progress.

Master Scholarships at University of Lausanne

To facilitate access to Master's degrees by students with qualifications from foreign universities, the University of Lausanne makes available around ten Master's grants which are awarded on a competitive basis.

Candidates must choose a Master's programme from among those offered by the UNIL, except the Master of Medicine. The grant may not be used for any complementary studies required to enroll on the Master's degree and may not be used for EMBAs or Masters of Advanced studies.

Required conditions

The candidate must be the holder of a degree from a foreign university.
The qualification held by the candidate must be deemed equivalent to the UNIL Bachelor's degree.

Selection procedure

Candidates complete the "UNIL Master's Grant" form and submit their application to the Office for socio-cultural affairs (SASC, Unicentre, University of Lausanne, CH-1015 Lausanne, info.sasc@unil.ch) by 15 December 2011 at the latest. The application is examined by the University Rectorate to determine whether the candidate is admissible. In the event of a positive decision, the application is forwarded by the SASC to the UNIL Faculty responsible for the Master's on which the candidate wishes to be enrolled. The Faculty selects applications and notifies the SASC of its opinion based on the candidate's qualities, motivation and suitability for the Master's programme. The SASC forwards shortlisted applications to the selection committee which will award grants to students meeting all criteria according to the available budget.

Selection criteria

The grants are intended more particularly for students who distinguished themselves in their university studies and who have difficulty meeting their financial needs for the duration of the Master's. It is however necessary that the candidates have sufficient financial means to support themselves during the complementary studies that may be required prior to enroll on the Master's degree.

All students accepted have the possibility of receiving partial and in most cases full scholarships to attend our program (including accommodation, monthly living stipend, travel expenses and more).

Eligibility

Candidates from diverse backgrounds with an emphasis on law, economics, finance (business or accounting,) political science, anthropology, and sociology.
Candidates must be at the Masters level, meaning graduation from their undergraduate program by July 2011 (does not apply to exchange students).
Additionally a high level of English language ability (IELTS 6.5 or 7) is required. While students are not required to submit an IELTS or TOEFL score (though highly encouraged) with their application, we do expect in this case that the candidate provide some other equivalent method of reviewing language level (e.g. an academic paper written in English).

To give you some background on the college and our program:

The IUC was established in 2006 for the interdisciplinary and comparative study of law, economics and finance, in response to the clear lack of a transnational set of normative principles capable of controlling economic processes. The program specifically looks to engage students and young scholars from all over the world with special emphasis on the periphery, or 'global south', with leading figures in economics, law and the humanities.

The IUC offers a 1 year LLM program in Comparative Law, Economics and Finance as well as a 2 year MSc. A number of renown intellectuals and scholars from around the world serve on the faculty and advisory board, including: Guido Calabresi (former Dean of the Yale School of Law), David Gerber (Chicago Kent School of Law), Josef Halevi (University of Sydney), Duncan Kennedy (Harvard Law School), Ugo Mattei (University of Torino & University of California, Hastings), Stefano Rodotà (coauthor of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights), Amartya Sen (Nobel Laureate), Gunther Teubner (Frankfurt School), Jan Toporowski (SOAS, University of London), Gustavo Zagrebelsky (Emeritus President of the Italian Constitutional Court).

Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq, who died in 1920, bequested to the University of Canterbury an endowment for scholarships in classical literature in memory of his father, the Reverend Charles Alabaster.
Two scholarships are offered annually to matriculated and undergraduate students of the University of Canterbury or, under special conditions, a scholarship may be offered to a graduate.

Eligibility
Two scholarships, tenable for one year, shall be offered for competition every year to students in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses.

Register on their academic course by the given start date, as specified in their confirmation email. Scholarships may not be deferred to the following academic year.
Be registered as a full-time student and be classified as overseas for fee purposes (or classified as European Union (non-UK) for European Union scholarships).
Seek permission and obtain consent from the International Office before making any changes to their programme of study (this includes changing course title, course transfers, suspending studies, etc.). Please note that approval is not guaranteed. Where changes are made without prior approval, the scholarship will be withdrawn and students may be required to repay the scholarship in full.
Seek permission from the International Office before extending a period of registered study. Scholarships are not automatically extendable.
Inform the International Office of any other scholarships/sponsorship held. The scholarship may be adjusted and/or withdrawn if other sources of funding have been awarded to a student. The scholarship is not available as a cash alternative.
Pay all outstanding tuition fees (for partial scholarship holders only) by University deadlines, as detailed on our Tuition Fees web page. Non-payment of fees may result in the scholarship being withdrawn and full fees being charged to the student.
Maintain living costs for the duration of their programme of study. Additional financial support is not available. The University recommends that students will need at least £700 per month for living costs. This figure is based on a single student and students with families will require considerably more.
Make satisfactory progress on their programme of study. The scholarship is subject to satisfactory progress.

Can I apply for admission to the university

Yes, you can apply for our International Office competitive scholarships if you are holding a conditional or an unconditional offer.

We also have non-competitive scholarships (e.g. Alumni Scholarship, Family Scholarship) and to be eligible to apply for our non-competitive scholarships before you come to Nottingham, you must have firmly accepted an unconditional offer – this would be to include the scholarship in your electronic CAS Certificate if you needed it for visa purposes.

1. According to the regulations stipulated by MOE, all undergraduate programs for international students are instructed in Chinese. Applicants with no command of Chinese are required to take the college preparatory courses for one to two years before pursuring major studies. And only by passing the examinations of the college preparatory courses, could they start their university studies.

2. Certain Chinese HEIs could conduct some postgraduate program and non-degree courses for general and senior scholars in English. Your paper must be your own original work, and you should not have used it in any other context. It will be judged on its academic merit. At least two members of the academic staff will assess the paper independently (double blind), and in case of dispute will refer the paper to a third member/party.

The Maria Pia Gratton International Award 2011

The Maria Pia Gratton International Award at the University of Illinois was established by the family and friends of Maria Pia Gratton. Pia passed away on October 31, 1995, at the age of 47. When she came to the United States, Pia had two small children, a degree in math, and little grasp of the English language. Pia enrolled in classes to learn English and computer programming, and with determination she made a home for her family, developed close friendships and began a career in her new country. Those who knew Pia knew her to be a beautiful woman, a caring mother, a loving wife, a dependable co-worker, a true friend, a conscientious student, a patient teacher, and a daring traveler. This award continues Pia’s memory with a living tribute to her life.

Who is eligible to apply for the Gratton Award?

This award is intended to enable a female graduate student from outside the United States to have an academic and cultural experience at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Preference will be given to a student who has had a limited opportunity to travel outside of her home country.

Phd Position Control Engineering In Europe

This fully funded studentship is available to start in 2011, under the supervision of Dr Charlie Wilson in the internationally renowned School of Environmental Sciences. (95% of research activity classified as internationally leading, excellent or recognised, RAE 2008). Funding is available for UK/EU students. Funding awarded for this project will cover tuition fees and stipend for UK students. EU students may be eligible for full funding, or tuition fees only, depending on the funding source. International students will not be eligible for this funding however they are still welcome to apply for the project but would have to find alternative funding.This PhD position is in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, starting October 2011. The topic of the PhD is pro-environmental behaviour with an emphasis on climate change mitigation. The goal is to use different behavioural and/or social science research methods to ‘triangulate’ the insights gained from any one particular line of enquiry. This may involve the application of different behavioural theories and models. ‘Triangulation’ here could mean comparing, contrasting, integrating … or demonstrating that integration is not possible. Research methods may include: controlled (lab) experiments; field experiments; cross-sectional surveys; focus groups; interviews; in situ observation. Combinations of experimental and other methods will be encouraged.
The specific research question to be tackled using this mixed methods approach is open. It may focus on a particular behaviour, or pro-environmental behaviour more generally. Applicants are encouraged to propose their own ideas with appropriate reasoning. This may be through an outline research proposal (max. 1-2 pages) which can be attached to the application form. Such proposals should give a sense of how the applicant may use mixed methods as part of an inter-disciplinary enquiry. Examples of research questions include: (1) Does one pro-environmental behaviour make another one more likely (spillover effect) or less likely (saturation effect), and to what extent does this depend on the behavioural context? (2) Are physical visibility or ‘social visibility’ important determinants of pro-environmental behaviour, and to what extent are these attributes correlated? (‘Social visibility’ implies communication through social networks). (3) What influence does excessive choice have on pro-environmental behaviour, and how much is excessive? Eligible applicants should have: (1) an academic background to Masters degree level in a behavioural, public health and/or environmental discipline; (2) experience designing and applying one or more behavioural and/or social science research methods; (3) an interest in inter-disciplinarity and applied research; (4) a willingness to contribute actively to the Tyndall Centre researcher network. Initiative and the ability to think creatively and work independently is also a must. Applicants with practical experience of behavioural work or behaviour change interventions in policy, business, NGOs or other fields are encouraged.

Eligibility

The Elite Research Scholarship is restricted to exceptional applicants whose research for their PhD will occur in a well-defined and managed (supervised) project (see http://www.utas.edu.au/graduate-research/elite).

Elite Research Scholarships are open to both international and domestic applicants.

Applicants must have:

a minimum of first class honours (H1) degree or equivalent, or
a masters by coursework degree may be viewed as equivalent if the overall results are at distinction average and it contains a significant research project with a grade of H1 or equivalent, or
relevant and substantial experience in an appropriate sector may be viewed as equivalent, providing the applicant can demonstrate a level of experience commensurate with the skills required for research.

Value

Scholarships are currently valued at AUD$30,000 tax free per annum. Candidates are eligible for performance based incentive payments on successful completion of Confirmation, annual progression and timely completion of the PhD.

Site visits

UTAS site visits are available for promising domestic (and NZ) applicants who:

meet the entry requirements;
have identified a project, and;
have corresponded with the Primary Supervisor.

The Primary Supervisor will recommend to the Dean of Graduate Research that a site visit should proceed.

One site visit per Elite Research Scholarship is available. Travel is restricted from within Australia (outside Tasmania) and New Zealand. One night’s accommodation, if required, is included together with incidentals to cover meals and/or taxi fares. The Dean of Graduate Research reserves the right to determine the level of financial support.

The iMATCH project investigates how policy environs interact with built and social environs to positively influence children’s independent mobility, active travel and physical activity to improve health outcomes. The project will survey children aged 10-13 years in matched neighbourhoods based on primary schools where policy and programs differ but built and social environments are similar. The research audits environmental features of neighbourhoods and policy interventions surveying children and parents on outdoor play, attitudes and perceptions towards travel and measuring children’s activities using an accelerometry/GPS approach. The project is a key study conducted by a team of internationally recognised experts from Griffith University, Curtin University, CQU, University of Melbourne and UNSW. The Children’s Active Travel, Connectedness and Health project (CATCH) project examines how factors of the social and built environment influence the independent mobility, active travel and the overall health of Australian children across a range of urban environments. The scholarship will support a PhD student whose work will focus primarily on the travel behaviour results of the research. This will include data from travel diaries, global positioning systems and qualitative datasets, focus of the research is likely to be children’s bicycle riding. The scholar will assist with fieldwork in the school environment. The student will be supervised by Dr Matthew Burke at the Urban Research Program, Griffith University. Scholarship Description:The School of Civil Engineering at The University of Sydney offers a scholarship for a highly qualified student to undertake full-time research leading to a Ph.D. degree in Environmental Fluid Mechanics.This research project is aimed to investigate the dynamics of biomineral suspended particle matter (SPM) in turbulently-stirred waters, with a particular focus on the interaction between microparticles made of cohesive mineral and micro-organisms in nutrient-controlled conditions. The objective of this research project is to assess the effect of micro-organisms on the floc fractal properties, aggregation and breakup efficiencies, and the time evolution of the SPM floc size and settling velocity distributions in nutrient controlled conditions. The project foresees a comprehensive experimental investigation in a newly designed facility which makes use of advanced techniques including optical recordings with micro-PIV devices. The project is also aimed at describing biomineral SPM dynamics with mathematical models that will be used in conjunction with the experimental data. The outputs and outcomes of this project have direct application to hydraulics and hydrology, water quality and management, and belong to the wider effort of our Environmental Fluids team to assess the repercussions of human activities and global water and soil changes on the ecosystem. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. F. Maggi and Prof. J. Patterson.Applicants must hold a MSc degree or equivalent. The PhD candidate is expected to have a strong background in fluid mechanics, physics or mathematics, and be interested in multidisciplinary approaches involving hydrology, biogeochemistry, and nutrient cycling. UNU-IAS PhD Scholarship Fellowship Programme

Since 1996, UNU-IAS offers PhD Fellowships to candidates in the last stages of their dissertation process to broaden their perspectives to other related scientific fields, and to expose them to international policy-making circles. So far, more than 90 Fellows from some 50 countries have passed through the PhD Fellowship Programme. Of those completing the programme, about one third have been women, and developing country participants have outnumbered developed country participants.

One or two PhD Fellowships are awarded each year for a period of 12 months, starting in September.

The Fellowship Programme provides the successful applicant with a unique opportunity to:

develop and advance their research under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and contribute to the overall research agenda of the Institute;
widen their research interests and professional networks by working in the international and multi-disciplinary context of UNU-IAS, and with its wider network of Japanese universities and research institutes, as well as international collaborators;
become exposed to the workings of the international and multilateral policy process and the broader UN system; and

The purpose of the UNU-IAS PhD Fellowship is to provide young scholars and policy-makers, especially from the developing world, with a multidisciplinarily context within which to pursue advanced research and training that are of professional interest to the applicant and of direct relevance to the research agenda of UNU-IAS. Research proposals for UNU-IAS PhD Fellowships should therefore relate clearly to one of the current research areas of the Institute, as well as aim to be policy relevant. 3. Eligibility and Conditions

Applicants must be at the dissertation writing stage of their PhD with a research proposal accepted by the candidate's university. Language proficiency in English is essential. Applicants from developing countries and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

UNU-IAS Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded for a period of 12 months. The starting date of the Ph.D. Fellowship Programme is 1 September. Successful applicants are required to be in Yokohama by this date. Residency in Yokohama for the full duration of the fellowship is required.

Fellows are provided with their own desk in a dedicated study room in the Institute, administrative support and desktop computing. Fellows have access to the UNU Library in Tokyo which includes an excellent collection of UN documents. They also have access via the UNU Library to various Japanese university libraries and computer databases. A limited range of other, more specialised computer hardware and software may also be available.

The fellowship provides a monthly stipend of JPY260,000 from which a monthly usage charge for accommodation is deducted (see below). A one-time-only settle-in-allowance of JPY 80,000 will be granted to each Fellow at the beginning of the programme for relocation, adjustment expenses, ground transportation and incidental costs. UNU-IAS provides Fellows with a return air ticket between his/her country of residence and Narita Airport. Settle-in-allowance and air tickets are, however, not provided for Fellows already residing in Japan before the commencement of the fellowship.

Fellows carry out their research in Yokohama under the supervision of a UNU-IAS faculty member and/or affiliated UNU-IAS network scholars. Fellows will spend about half of their working hours on their dissertation and the remaining half assisting the Institute’s projects and activities.

Ph.D. Fellows will be provided with accommodation by UNU-IAS (within 30 minute walk from the Institute). Usage charges other than utilities (electricity, water, gas, telephone, etc.) are as follows:

Sess.EuroPhD invites applications to the Doctoral Programme 2011 commencing on October 1 as part of the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The European PhD in Socio-Economic and Statistical Studies is an international, interdisciplinary graduate programme cooperating with nine partner universities. The doctoral degree Doctor Europaeus is awarded upon completion of the programme.

Sess.EuroPhD is a three year doctoral programme. An essential part of the curriculum is the experience gained through the study at partner universities. PhD candidates are required to spend at least one semester as well as a shorter research stay of 4–6 weeks abroad. The doctoral candidates have the opportunity to draw from the teaching, supervision, and knowledge of more than 40 academic instructors at the nine partner universities in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Haifa, Lille, Rome, Southampton, and Tampere.

Dissertation projects from the following seven major areas of interdisciplinary research are welcomed:

2. Processes of change in economic organizations and institutions

Source-journalist relationships in the reporting of climate change

Aim

This project will examine journalists’ strategies for the sourcing of stories about climate change. Who is given voice in media reports, and how different news actors are represented, is one of the most pressing issues for the public mediation of climate science and climate policy. Journalists have been found to misrepresent the scientific consensus on climate change by deploying ‘false balance’ (e.g., Boykoff 2007). Yet in other cases science journalists are overly-reliant on single scientific sources, going against the journalistic norm of testing the claims of news sources (e.g., Conrad, 1999). The question of how climate reporting is sourced has become more acute than ever in the fall-out from the UEA ‘Climategate’ affair. On the one hand, climate sceptics have successfully positioned themselves as part of the story, making it difficult for journalists to ignore their views; on the other hand, there are indications that scientists may be retreating from media appearances after seeing the pressure to which the CRU scientists have been subjected. Some media commentators, such as the International Broadcasting Trust (2010), believe that Climategate has prompted a return to framing climate news in terms of a polarised debate between equal parties. For broadcasters in particular, with their legal obligation to cover controversial issues with due impartiality, Climategate re-invigorates the already troublesome question of the extent to which impartiality requires the sceptic position to be heard.

Methodology

This project will build on analyses of the ideological framing of UK press coverage of climate science (Boykoff 2008, Carvalho 2007) to look at how the UK news media respond to Climategate in terms of their sourcing strategies. Through qualitative interviews with journalists, it will examine how they decide who to interview in climate stories and how they weigh the inclusion of a range of voices with faithful reporting of the current state of scientific knowledge. It will also draw on interviews with scientists to investigate their willingness to make themselves available for media comment given the hostility and tenaciousness with which some bloggers now pursue climate scientists with public profiles. The findings from the interviews will be analysed alongside a discourse analysis of actual media content to reveal how journalist-source relationships shape news output.

The Grantham Institute Studentships

This project is one of 24 shortlisted by the Grantham Institute, The student will be based in the Department of Humanities but will interact with other Grantham students through attendance at Institute seminars, including a fortnightly series organised by and for research students. The project will be supervised by Dr Felicity Mellor, lecturer in science communication in the Department of Humanities. The studentship will commence in October 2011. Our historians encompass specialisms in British, European, the history of the Americas, and East Asian history. We are part of the Wellcome Trust-funded Northern Centre for the History of Medicine, a partnership between the medical historians at Newcastle and Durham Universities.

Our reputation for producing dynamic and innovative work was confirmed by the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 - 70 per cent of our research was classed as either 'internationally excellent' or 'internationally recognised', with 15 per cent classed as 'world leading’.

We provide our students with excellent research facilities including work stations in the postgraduate suite, first class computing and printing facilities, dedicated teaching space in the Armstrong Building and financial support for conferences and field trips. Through the School of Historical Studies Postgraduate Forum, our students are able to promote their research and develop their own intellectual networks.

For 2011 entry we expect to have one studentship in history available through the AHRC’s Research Preparation Master's scheme. This scheme supports students undertaking Master’s courses that focus on advanced study and research training explicitly intended to provide a foundation for further research at doctoral level. Full and partial awards are available through this scheme. A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of up to £9,490 (2011/12 rates). A partial award covers fees only. The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:

University of Colombo (Sri Lanka)

Graduates of the course will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific, and will have opportunities to research and examine the application of human rights and democratisation in the field with the partner institutions.

Course Structure

In the first semester at the University of Sydney, students will undertake a foundational course in social science, legal and political approaches to human rights and democratisation. During the second semester students will follow two core units of study complemented by either supervised research, an internship at an in-country organisation specialising in human rights/democratisation or undertake further specialised electives. Students must select one of the four partners universities listed above to undertake their second semester study.

34 scholarships, covering course fees and a living and travel allowance, will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Commission.

Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries. The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratisation.

The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence offers one of the world’s largest and most distinguished graduate and postgraduate programmes in the social sciences.

Its Departments of Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences, with their researchers, fellows, faculty and visitors, constitute an international research environment with a community of scholars drawn from over fifty countries in Europe and beyond.

The Department of History and Civilization (HEC) offers a structured four-year doctoral programme. In the first year doctoral researchers study historiographical and methodological issues and the in-depth exploration of selected central themes of European history.

In the second, third and fourth years, researchers pursue their individual research, and are invited to present the results of their work in seminars and workshops. Professors direct more specialized research seminars, tailored to the needs of researchers.

The Department provides training in research skills, IC&T and multimedia skills and encourages researchers and fellows to make use of the Language Centre.

Funding is provided for doctoral researchers to go on a mission twice a year to work in archives and libraries. Researchers may also receive financial support to present their work-in-progress at international conferences.

PhD student position in Historical Geology and Palaentology at the Department of Earth Sciences

Origins of Proterozoic-Cambrian photosynthetic microbiota

Starting date: Open from the closing date for applications.

Unicellular, organic-walled photosynthetic microbiota (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) diversified at an increasing rate through the Proterozoic and in the Cambrian explosion. Their phylogenetic relationships are still poorly understood because their morphology is not always sufficient to infer their systematic position. Studies of phenotypical features, combined with cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers may help to unravel their biological affinities. More precise placement within a geologic time frame will allow the cause-effect relationships between evolving photosynthesing (primary producers) and forthcoming heterotrophic biota (consumers) versus global environmental change to be better understood.

The PhD student will collaborate with researchers at Uppsala and in foreign universities working with the palaeobiology, systematics, ultrastructure and biogeochemistry of cell wall, and the evolution of organic-walled microbiota. The aim of the project is to elucidate the biological affiliations and relationships to extant microbiota of selected microfossils (acritarchs), with emphasis on their life cycle, reproduction and environmental adaptations. The study will be based on analyses of phenotypical features and the cell wall ultrastructure, biogeochemistry and biomarkers by new microscopic, spectroscopic and tomographic techniques. This interdisciplinary approach between Palaeobiology, Earth Sciences and Astrobiology encourages a strongly motivated candidate to develop collaboration with scientists from different disciplines and across the fields of studies.

The applicant should have a university degree with a background in micropalaeontology, palynology, biology and/or geology, and a keen interest in palaeobiology, evolution and biogeochemistry. Applicants with skills in microscopy, laboratory techniques and image analyses are especially welcomed. The abilities to work in a team, to share experiences and knowledge, and be open to the application of new methods of research are essential. Because of a strong international character of the research, applicant is expected to have a good knowledge (spoken and written) of the English language. Acquisition of a (basic) knowledge of Swedish is strongly recommended to facilitate departmental communication and activity, but this is not a requirement for recruitment.

The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research and study. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative duties can be part of the position up to 20% of a fulltime work.

The Ph.D. position is for four years where financing for the first year will be a postgraduate study grant (Utbildningsbidrag) and during the following three years as an employee of the university as a Ph.D student.

The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies. Priority is given to those who are deemed to show the greatest aptitude for a successful completion of the graduate studies. The Uppsala University is strongly committed to the equal opportunity policy and women are especially invited to apply.

5.Admission to Graduate School The finally selected applicants are requested to make arrangement for enrollment at their intended Japanese graduate schools by themselve~. 6. Accommodation The grantee is responsible for finding his/her own accommodation. As some graduate schools have their own accommodations, it is recommended to inquire the host scientist about their availability.

7. BankAccount
The grantee is requested to open an account at a Japanese bank upon his/her arrival and inform the Foundation of the bank account details sending a copy of bankbook.

8. Alien Registration . The grantee is required to file application for alien registration within ninety (90) dars from the date of arrival in Japan at the municipal or ward office where the .grantee resides.

9. Liaison The grantee should keep inclose contact with the Foundation and keep them informed of any change of his/her address or other pertinent matters.

10. Report The grantee is required to submit to the head and/or dean of the faculty of his/her university in home country a progress report of his/her research and other activities every two months with a copy to the host scientist and the Foundation. When his/her research is presented for publication or dissemination, the Foundation's support should be acknowledged in an appropriate way.
A copy of such publication or offprint is requested to be sent to the Foundation.

11. Insurance The Foundation will buy the following insurance for the period from the date of the grantee's departure from his/her home country until the date he/she is admitted as a student of the graduate school or until the date he/she arranges similar insurance whichever comes earlier. The grantee is required to arrange such insurance with the graduate school by himself/herself after he/she is admitted as a student. Illness contracted before the grantee's arrival inJapan, chronic disease and dental care will not be covered by the insurance to be bought by the Foundation. 1) Death from injury: '¥15 million 2) Treatment-of injury: Up to ¥2 million 3) Death from illness: ¥2 million 4) Treatment of illness: Up to ¥2 million 12.
Japanese Language It is important for foreign students to know and understand Japanese language to suchan extent that they can pursue their study and research at the graduate school and spend social life in Japan. Some Japanese graduate schools require Japanese language proficiency to certain level. . The Foundation will, therefore, support the grantees to study Japanese language for half a year before commencement of either .the Master's Course or the Doctoral Course as described in Clause 2.

13. Compliance with Laws and Regulations The grantee must abide by the laws and regulations of Japan.

14. Suspension or Termination of the Scholarship
The grantees of the Hitachi Scholarship Award are expected to devote themselves full-time to their studies and research described in their applications and any employment in Japan during the term of the scholarship may not be accepted. The scholarship will be suspended or terminated if the Foundation judges that the foregoing terms and conditions are not observed in good faith or in the following cases:
14-1 When it becomes impossible to continue study or research because of illness or other reasons
14-2 Poor result of study record
14-3 Misconduct

HITACHI SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION'S PROGRAM

Qualifications

Be faculty members of one of the eligible universities stated below.
Have been nominated by their university’s presidential office, with the approval and recommendation of the faculty and the department.
Have received a specific and confirmed invitation from a professor at a Japanese university, who will act as the host professor to collaborate with and/or advise the applicant until graduation or the completion of the program.

Application and Screening

Applicants to all programs must be faculty members at one of the eligible universities.
English will be the common language used in most of the international conferences. Therefore,we strongly suggest that applicants have a good knowledge of English as a communication tool. A TOEFL score of 530 or above is preferred.
The Foundation shall mail application forms every year in June to the presidential office of each university.
Each applicant shall submit the application to his/her university’s presidential office with all requested information. The Foundation will accept applications and nomination letters from the presidential offices until the end of November. No direct application from individual will be accepted.
The application form should be supplemented with a recommendation letter from the Head of Department and/or the Dean of Faculty, along with a confirmed certificate of acceptance from a Japanese host professor (Scholarship) or advisory professor/research counterpart (Research/Komai Fellowship).
The selection committee of the Foundation initially screens applications received and identifies candidates to interview.
Interviews with candidates shall be carried out individually, usually at candidates’ home universities, during the period from January to April.
One of the most important points for evaluation is why the university has nominated the candidate and what kind of scenario the department or faculty has for the candidate in terms of academic collaboration after graduation. If the applicant’s department or faculty has been implementing specific cooperation/collaboration with the laboratory of the proposed host professor in Japan, this will receive positive consideration in the screening of the candidate.
Following the interview, the Foundation may contact both senior advisors at the home university and the proposed host professor in Japan for further verification.

The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program provides an opportunity for the next generation of historians to experience primary-source research and to work closely with eminent scholars.

The Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program has two components:

Gilder Lehrman History Scholars (10 students) are invited to participate in a five-week research program in New York City from June 26 to July 30, 2011; each student is awarded a fellowship worth $10,000 that includes tuition, books, field trips, a travel allowance of up to $600 for transportation to and from the program in New York City, room and board, and a $2,200 stipend.

Gilder Lehrman One-Week Scholars (30 Finalists) will be invited to a one-week program in New York City from June 18 to June 25, 2011; each student is awarded a fellowship worth $1,500 that includes tuition, field trips, a travel allowance of up to $600 for transportation to and from the program in New York City, and room and board. The weeklong program fosters an interest in American history through field trips, discussions with professionals about careers for history majors, and lectures by leading scholars such as David Brion Davis, Christopher Leslie Brown, and Pauline Maier.

Eligibility:

At the time of application (February 15, 2011) students:

Must be considered sophomores or juniors in an accredited college or university. (Must have completed at least one full year of undergraduate work before applying and should expect to return to school for a full year of undergraduate study after the program)
Must have completed at least one course in college in American history
Should expect to major or specialize in American history or American studies.

Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Biology M. Hildred Blewett Scholarship

To enable early-career women to return to physics research careers after having had to interrupt those careers. The scholarship consists of a one-year award of up to $45,000 (applicants can apply in a subsequent year for one additional year of support). Allowed expenses include dependent care (limited to 50% of the award), salary, travel, equipment, and tuition and fees. Overhead charges by the institution are not allowed.

The applicant must currently be a U.S. citizen, legal resident, or resident alien of the United States or Canada. She must be currently in Canada or the United States and must have an affiliation with a research-active educational institution or national lab. She must have completed work toward a PhD. Applicants are strongly encouraged to be members of the American Physical Society.

History of the Award

The award was established from a generous bequest from M. Hildred Blewett, an accelerator physicist who died in 2004. Hildred Blewett was passionate about physics and wanted to help women overcome obstacles by establishing the scholarship.

PhD and Postdoc Positions Scholarship in Solar Radiation and Energy, 2010

Overview

An excellent PhD opportunity is available for a joint project with the Weather and Energy Research Unit at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University in the area of Solar Radiation and Energy.

The appointed PhD student will develop a solar radiation and energy forecasting system aimed at improving the way in which solar energy produced by a selection of energy devices is integrated into the electricity grid. Such a system may eventually be implemented operationally by bodies such as the Australian Energy Market Operator and/or solar power farms operators.

This work will involve analysing solar radiation output from Numerical Weather Prediction models by comparing it with historical observations in order to improve our understanding of the physical processes relevant to solar radiation. The forecasting system will then capitalize on this detailed analysis. Other areas of weather and climate science will benefit from this solar radiation analysis.

Key Capabilities

- An understanding of meteorology, especially of solar radiation processes, and effects of clouds and aerosols.
- Familiarity with at least one software language for data analysis (possibly R)
High level interpersonal skills suited to effective interaction with other members of the research team and industry contacts.
- Demonstrated high level of communication skills.
- Active support of the CSIRO code of conduct and HSE requirements.

Key Result Areas/Duties

- Analyse solar radiation data from observations (in situ and satellite) and model output for Australia with a possible extension to a wider region using a standard software program (e.g. R, IDL, Matlab).
- Investigate and improve our knowledge of solar radiation forecasts provided by Numerical Weather Prediction models.
- Investigate and improve our knowledge of the interaction between solar radiation and solar energy production for a selection of energy devices.
- Develop a solar energy forecasting system using a combination of Numerical Weather Prediction model output and historical data for a selection of energy devices.
Write and submit research papers, and a Ph.D. thesis

Neurocognitive Performance in Type 2 Diabetes (Our Ref: RS10-LS01)
Applications are invited for a three year full-time PhD studentship at Northumbria University, investigating neurocognitive performance in type 2 diabetes. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Michael Smith (Northumbria University), Dr Leigh Riby (Northumbria University) and Dr Rachel Mitchell (Durham University).

The project will involve novel investigation of the cognitive domains which are adversely influenced by poor glucose regulation (in ‘healthy’ individuals), as well as in patients with impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes. The project will comprise empirical studies relating to our ongoing work on glucose regulation and cognitive functioning, however there will be some scope for the successful applicant to develop some of their own studies relating to this area of research. The project will involve both behavioural cognitive testing and EEG/ERP techniques, with the possibility of conducting some functional neuroimaging work.

Research and Innovation Centre welcomes applications for 3-years research fellowships to support brilliant and highly motivated students to get the PhD title in the fields covered by the Centre.

We welcome applications from students of all countries. The official language of the programme is English. Applications can be sent from 13 September 2010.

General information

Eleven (11) scholarships are available for PhD research in the fields covered by the strategic research areas of our Centre: Environment and Natural Resources Area , Food Quality and Nutrition Area, Genomics and Crop Biology Area. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their curriculum and of the letters of reference. Letters sent by the applicants will not be considered (see below the form for the reference letter).

The grant is for three years and the expected start is February 2011 (Spring 2011 at the latest). The gross salary is 20.000 Euros per year. Students will also benefit of funding for travelling to our projects’ partner institutions as the projects include a minimum period of 6-months-stay at the institution co-responsible for the single PhD project.

There is a general empowerment of the student choice when applying to our PhD research projects. Candidates can postulate for one to three specific projects (see list).

Selected candidates are awarded a 3-years fellowship. The scholarship can be additionally extended for up to 1 year, pending the approval of the FEM PhD Fellowships Committee.

Please note that the CRI issues a specific certificate of attendance, but candidates are asked to register at the doctoral school of the University partner of the project or of another University, in order to get the conferral of the PhD degree. The selected candidate has 1 year time from the start of the contract to register at the University doctoral school. If the candidate fails to register within the first year, the scholarship will be interrupted.

Postgraduate PhD scholarship in Climate Change Effects to Plant Ecosystems

Applications are invited from talented young candidates for a PhD scholarship in effects to plant ecosystems from climate change.

The PhD will be enrolled at Ecosystems programme, Biosystems Division at Risø DTU. The Ecosystems programme work on effects of climate change to ecosystems, ecosystems feedback, adaptation and mitigation as well as ecosystem modeling in relation to climate change. The project will be carried out within the highly interdisciplinary and international research environment in the division. The project will employ some of the advanced experimental facilities the division has for conducting studies of climate change effects on ecosystems and biological processes, including advanced phytotron, controlled environments, field scale experiments and laboratories. The scholarship is carried out in close collaboration with the Nordic NordForsk initiative within the project ‘Sustainable primary production in a changing climate.

The project
The PhD project is related to effects of climate change on plant production, quality and sustainability. Climate change will change plant ecosystems and affect conditions for plant growth, and in that way affect not only yield and composition of crop biomass, but also change the ecosystem demands for nutrients, pesticides and water. The project will explore how future climate change scenarios will affect plant production and fungal disease severity in selected model crops; the results will be used by collaborators for modeling the sustainability of the future crop production. Part of the PhD will be devoted to study plant adaptation and acclimation to fast abiotic and biotic stress by the use of molecular tools for gene expression profiling and physiological measurements.

The PhD project will focus on understanding of key processes in plants under abiotic and biotic stress in multifactor stress scenarios e.g. with elevated CO₂, ozone, temperature, limited water and foliar diseases. Plant population responses and feedback to climate change through genetic composition or gene expression will be explored in experiments with spontaneous and deliberate plant selection over a number of generations. The experiment will be carried out in Risø DTU’s advanced experimental facilities and include extreme events as part of the climate manipulation.

Qualifications
Candidates should have (or obtain) a master’s degree in molecular plant biology, plant physiology or plant breeding, or similar competences. A candidate with experience in molecular methods and plant population genetic analysis will be preferred.

Approval and Enrollment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrollment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The salary and appointments terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The scholarship is for 3 years. Intelligent Computing is one of the high-tech trends of modern computer science. It provides methods and tools for building complex learning systems, able to adapt and evolve as well as to act in an intelligent way what was so far reserved for human beings. Our „Intelligent Computing” project, carried out by the consortium of 3 Polish and 16 research institutions from all around the world, provides PhD students with a unique opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of leading scientists and prepare their PhD dissertations in one of the most innovative fields of science. It is expected that the project will result in both new theoretical findings concerning the foundations of Intelligent Computing and in novel applications in the areas of multi-agent technologies, data analysis and mining, decision support systems and other. There will be 15 PhD students working within the project, selected in a careful recruitment process taking into account e.g., the background of the candidates and their good command of English.

The successful candidates will be simultaneously enrolled to a special track of the PhD Studies at the Systems Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences.

Dietary change – The role of meat free choice(s) in addressing food security, consumer behaviour, marketing barriers and enablers. (Our Ref: RS10-NBS01)

Food 2030, the UK Government’s strategic response to developing a sustainable food supply chain, suggests a need to reduce our consumption of meat and its impact on our health and the environment. To date, accounting for the environmental impact of foodstuffs has primarily seen the advancement and streamlining of supply-side life-cycle analysis techniques to measure embedded carbon emissions of products. A notable outcome of much of this research in the food industry has been the realisation that meat products are significantly carbon-inefficient when compared to, for example, grain or vegetable products (e.g. Williams et al., 2006). However, in addition to this, ‘meat alternative’ products may also be associated with other win-win opportunities across the health and sustainability agenda, such as lower fat content, reduced salt, reduced water use or a smaller land use footprint.

Such findings have led to recommendations for reductions in the meat content of diets (e.g. IPCC, 2008). Although wholesale changes in consumer diets or consumption habits is an unlikely achievable goal in the short term, it is possible that improving demand for meat-substituting products could provide a means for better achievement of sustainability and quality of life targets. Despite growing media coverage of these issues consumer uptake of meat free choices within the UK remains limited. There is a clear need to understand the consumer within this emerging debate and the issues that drive market demand and /or create disengagement.

This research, co-sponsored by Premier Foods Ltd., seeks to investigate the factors that influence market demand for meat substitutes and meat free products. Segments of consumers that share common behavioural characteristics will be identified to provide a better understanding individual consumer preferences. Specific research questions that may be addressed in the project include:

• What understanding do UK consumers have of current and emerging the issues of food security – what’s hot and what’s not?
• What are the barriers and enabling factors that influence behavioural change in the meat free sector?
• How can consumers be segmented in terms of both attitude and behaviour?
• What voluntary, policy, and other alternative mechanisms could be developed or structured to influence behavioural change in this sector.

The Master’s in Development Evaluation and Management focuses on the efforts made by a wide range of public and private actors to promote development in low-income countries. It provides a solid understanding of past and present aid policies of multilateral and bilateral donors, and of the major aid modalities and instruments deployed. This track conceptualises socio-political and economic development as the outcome of interactions between a conditioning institutional environment and the agency of local, national and international actors, including multi- and bilateral, governmental and non-governmental aid actors. Special attention is paid to the importance of micro-level institutions and processes, and how these condition the effectiveness of development efforts in improving livelihoods and neutralising processes of social exclusion. As all phases of the project cycle partly unfold in a local context, the powers constituting this context co-organise the processes of planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of interventions. Exploring in detail how local context transforms development interventions is of crucial importance, then, to recognising opportunities for resolving the poverty conundrum.

This track is intended for participants with work experience in civil society in the South (e.g. at research institutes or universities, or with local NGOs or entrepreneurial associations), donor agencies (including international NGOs, bilateral and multilateral donors) and government institutions. The candidate should be involved in development interventions or poverty-reduction initiatives in micro or meso-level projects and programmes. Professionally, the candidate should hold middle-management positions involving policy responsibilities and/or managerial responsibilities at the interface between different policy levels (local to national, national to international) or between different arenas (e.g. civil society- government, government-donors, INGO-national NGO, etc).

The Master’s programme offers two tracks with specific objectives and course packages that are intended for different audiences. The first track is primarily macro focused, while the second focuses mainly on the micro level.

Admission requirements

The following candidates are eligible to apply for the Master’s programmes:

• Applicants from the South must hold a university degree (Bachelor or Master) of at least four years of study in Social Sciences (Economics, Political Science, Sociology, International Relations, or related disciplines). The future of sustainable development is critically related to the promotion of better governance at the local, national, regional and international level. At once a cause and a consequence of governance failures, violent conflict is incompatible with sustainable development. Central in this nexus between development, governance and conflict are processes of state formation, state failure and state reconstruction. Adopting a political economy perspective, the study programme analyses governance problems and possible responses with due account of specific historical pathways of countries and the interaction between the national state level, local society level dynamics and the impact of global developments.

Most of our students are engaged in development, professionally and/or as researchers. The objective of the Master’s programme is to provide them with multidisciplinary theoretical insights and practical tools that will improve their capacity to analyse governance challenges at different levels and how they relate to processes of violent conflict and development. Graduates will understand and be able to analyse, from the local to the global level, the governance problems confronting developing countries today. Theoretical insights, policy strategies and best practices as well as failures are explored in order that graduates could apply this knowledge in their future professional environments.

The Master’s programme in Governance and Development offers two tracks with specific objectives, courses and target audiences. The first track explores governance and development issues against the background of violent conflict and the challenge of post-conflict state reconstruction. The second addresses governance and development challenges from the particular perspective of local institutions and poverty reduction.

VLIR-UOS Masters Degree Scholarships for Developing Countries, Belgium

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries so that they can follow a master or training programme in Belgium. These scholarships cover all related expenses. Every year, VLIR-UOS awards up to 180 scholarships to first-year master students and 70 scholarships to training participants. All programmes are specifically designed for people in positions of responsibility in civil society (e.g. universities, schools, NGOs, local communities, governments).

VLIR-UOS funds and facilitates academic cooperation and exchange between higher education institutions in Flanders (Belgium) and those in developing countries, which aims at building capacity, knowledge and experience for a sustainable development. Applicants applying for both academic admission and a VLIR-UOS scholarship need to consider both the admission requirements and the scholarship criteria.

Applicants applying for academic admission but not for a scholarship simply need to fulfill only the admission requirements of the host university running the programme.

The host university is in charge of the academic admission of applications. Study results will be taken into consideration during the selection, but the most important academic selection criteria are relevant professional experience and prospects for applying the acquired insights after return to the developing country. The academic admission requirements are specific to every programme.

You must fill in the pre-screening form at the bottom of the page of the programme you want to follow. You may only choose one programme. If you apply to more than one programme your details will be entered more than once in our central database and all your applications will be inadmissible.

So you must follow the correct and complete procedure below.

1. Apply on the VLIR-UOS website via the pre-screening form: fill in name, birth date, country, etc…;

2. Receive a VLIR-UOS application/file number by return e-mail from VLIR-UOS;

3. Apply on the website from the host university through the link mentioned in the return e-mail from VLIR-UOS;

PhD Scholarship in Neuroscience, The Innsbruck Medical University

The Innsbruck Medical University, located in Tyrol (Austria) seeks talented and committed young researchers for its PhD Program “Signal Processing in Neurons” (SPIN).

Positions are available for 3 years and include intensive training in translational research in neuroscience, lab rotations in the twelve participating laboratories, free access to core facilities, a SPIN-specific training and mentoring program, career development and funding for research. Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Berge

At the Department of Mathematics there is a vacant position as postdoctoral fellow within the project “Modelling transport in porous media over multiple scales”.

The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term post, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is 2 years.

It is not possible for any person to work under more than one temporary appointment as postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.

The project this position is a component of is funded by the Research Council of Norway and the University of Bergen under the Outstanding Young Investigator programme. The successful candidate will join a research team which aims at integrating the fields of upscaling, multi-scale methods and numerical linear algebra within the context of multi-phase flow in porous media. Applications of particular interest include oil and gas recovery as well as CO2 storage. The project will address both theoretical and practical issues, and the candidate will be expected to familiarize him/herself with a broad spectrum of knowledge to form an active part of the research team.

We are soliciting applications from candidates with a background in applied mathematics. Special qualifications which should be emphasized in the application are familiarity with numerical methods for partial differential equations, multi-grid pre-conditioners, multi-phase flow in porous media and programming.

The position is meant to conduct research on multi-level vehicle routing problems. The work, which involves the implementation and testing of heuristic optimization strategies, will be carried out in close collaboration with Kenneth Sörensen and Peter Goos. Short project description

The main aim of this project is to develop efficient solution methods for several reallife multi-level vehicle routing problems. In multi-level vehicle routing problems, decisions are taken on different levels. For

example:

• In multi-depot vehicle routing problems, decisions need to be taken on which customer to service from which depot, besides the typical routing decisions (determining the sequence of the customers in the routes and the assignment of customers to vehicles).

• In school bus routing problems, decisions to be taken include the assignment of students to bus stops, the selection of bus stops to use, as well as the typical routing decisions.

• In location-routing problems, the algorithm decides the optimal location of distribution facilities, as well as the typical routing decisions.

A second research topic of this project is the search for the most appropriate type of solution method for multi-level routing problems: iterative or integrated. We will examine specifically whether integrated optimization yields better results than sequential or iterative optimization, and what the main influencing factors are for the differences in performance.

A third important research topic that we intend to study is the interaction between different neighborhoods that operate on different levels of a multi-level problem. This will lead to a better understanding of the working of these neighborhoods and their interaction, and make the design of more powerful metaheuristics possible.

Finally, as a fourth research topic we intend to study the integration of exact methods into the developed heuristics. More and more, the study of so-called matheuristics, heuristics integrating mathematical programming methods, are being viewed as an interesting research avenue. Progress in the development of general integer programming solvers (such ILOG’s Cplex) during the last decade has been impressive, and has become such that using these solvers for real-life (sub)problems has become an attractive option.

In fact, multi-level problems offer an interesting playground for this type of methods, as some of the sub-problems can potentially be solved using exact methods, whereas others can be solved using neighborhood search heuristics.
